Course Information
Description	Topics may include introductory treatments of sets, logic, number systems, number theory, relations, functions, probability and statistics. Appropriate applications are included.
Prerequisites	See Placement Guidelines in the the LSCPA College Catalog.
Learning Outcomes	Upon completion of the course, students will: 1. Use and present quantitative information in connection with an argument or problem solution and explicate it in an effective format. 2. Construct and present a detailed problem statement with evidence of relevant contextual factors and possible approaches for solving the problem, then implement a solution and review the results. 3. Develop a logical, consistent plan to solve a problem, recognize consequences of the solution, and articulate a reason for choosing solution method. 4. Apply the strategies for problem solving method to problems using both inductive and deductive reasoning. 5. Develop procedures for using sets and visualizing relations among sets with Venn diagrams, and apply them to solve problems that are modeled with sets. 6. Develop logical arguments and determine validity of arguments using truth tables or Euler diagrams. 7. Identify patterns in numbers and prove or disprove the patterns. 8. Find unique prime factorizations of composite numbers. 9. Describe the fundamental counting principle to solve counting problems. 10. Solve counting problems involving permutations, combinations, or Pascal?s triangle. 11. Find probabilities with theoretical, empirical probability formulas. 12. Find probabilities with addition rules. 13. Apply the conditional probability formula and determine whether the two events are independent. 14. Determine the annual percentage rate for different types of loans. 15. Compute monthly mortgage payments of fixed-rate mortgages and adjustable-rate mortgages. 16. Determine returns on stock investments.
Core Objectives	* Communication skills: Students will demonstrate effective written, oral and visual communication. * Critical Thinking Skills: Students will engage in creative and/or innovative thinking, and/or inquiry, analysis, evaluation, synthesis of information, organizing concepts and constructing solutions. * Empirical and Quantitative Skills: Students will demonstrate applications of scientific and mathematical concepts.

Textbooks	Textbook Purchasing Statement: A student attending Lamar State College Port Arthur is not under any obligation to purchase a textbook from the college-affiliated bookstore. The same textbook may also be available from an independent retailer, including an online retailer. The text for this course is provided by Lumen Learning, using open source materials, but you will need an access code to use the online LumenOHM system. If a student puchased the Seahawk Book Bundle they should already have been provided an access code for course materials. Only students who opted out will be required to purchase an access code separately. This can be done by clicking any of the homework links in the course content and following the instructions. Total cost of the access code for this course is $25,

Course Policies
Instructor Policies	Blackboard: All relevant information about this course will be communicated to you using your LSCPA email and via Blackboard. You should check your email daily, and regularly log in to Blackboard to check for any announcements you may have missed. All communications for this course should be sent using your LSCPA email. Communications from private emails (gmail, etc.) will be ignored for safety/privacy purposes. Homework: All homework will be done online using Lumen Learning's OHM system, accessed through Blackboard. Lumen OHM is fully integrated into Blackboard, so you do not need to create any new account, but you should log in and get started as soon as possible. All homework assignments will be due the last day of the semester. Your homework average will count as 20% of your final grade. Mid-term Exams: There will be a total of 2 exams, occurring at regular intervals throughout the semester. Exams will be administered on Lumen OHM, accessed through Blackboard. The dates for the exams are given on the course schedule located on Blackboard. There will be no extensions or make-up exams, for any reason whatsoever. If you are unable to take an exam on the date shown on the schedule, you must let me know beforehand so that we can make other arrangements. Each exam grade will count as 25% of your final grade. Quizzes: There will be a quiz available to accompany each module of material. The purpose of these quizzes is to encourage you to stay on pace and to help you focus for the exams. Please make sure you are aware of the due dates, which are posted on the schedule on Blackboard. There are a total of 6 quizzes, each of which will count as 5% of your final grade.
Attendance Policy	Since this is an online course and we will not be meeting in person, the rate and pace of attendance is left somewhat up to the student. It is the sole responsibility of the student to make sure that they are current and up to date in the material and to participate in all posted assignments and activities, and they are expected to do so out of their own desire to learn and succeed. The student's online participation will be observed to an extent, and for any borderline cases of assigning final grades, this record will be taken into consideration.
Academic Honesty	Academic honesty is expected from all students, and dishonesty in any form will not be tolerated. Please consult the LSC-PA policies (Section IX, subsection A, in the Faculty Handbook) for consequences of academic dishonesty.
Facility Policies	No food or tobacco products are allowed in the classroom. Only students enrolled in the course are allowed in the classroom, except by special instructor permission. Use of electronic devices is prohibited.
